Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup Smoked bacon (diced)
  • 2 White onions (diced)
  • 1/2 head White cabbage
  • 1 teaspoon White sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil (optional)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon Butter

Instructions

  1. Cook the Bacon: Heat a large pan over medium heat. Add the diced bacon. If the bacon is lean, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to help it cook. Fry the bacon until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add Onion: Add the sliced onions to the pan with the bacon. Cook until the onions are translucent and softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add Cabbage: Add the shredded cabbage to the pan with the bacon and onion. Stir and fry together for about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Simmer: Pour a cup of water over the cabbage. Add sugar, vegetable butter, and season with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  5. Cover and Cook: Cover the pan and let the mixture simmer until the cabbage is tender, about 25 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  6. Reduce: Once the cabbage is tender, remove the lid and continue cooking until most of the liquid has evaporated, enhancing the flavors and texture.
