Crispy Mashed Potato Patties with Savory Meat & Cheese Filling

By: Rabia

🥔 Ingredients

For the Potato Base:

  • 3 cups mashed potatoes (cold, leftover potatoes work best)

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

For the Savory Filling:

  • 1 cup ground beef, pork, or chicken (cooked and seasoned)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Frying:

  • 2 eggs, beaten (for coating)

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko for extra crispiness)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

Prepare the Filling:
In a skillet, cook ground meat with onion until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheese. Let cool slightly.

  1. Make the Potato Dough:
In a large bowl, mix mashed potatoes, egg, flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. The mixture should be firm enough to shape—add more flour if needed.

  2. Assemble the Patties:

    • Take a small handful of the potato mixture and flatten it into a round disc.

    • Place about 1 tablespoon of the meat-cheese filling in the center.

    • Fold the edges over and shape into a patty, sealing the filling inside.

    • Dust lightly with flour.

  3. Coat and Fry:

    • Dip each patty in beaten egg, then coat with breadcrumbs.

    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.

    • Fry patties 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.

    • Drain on paper towels.

  4. Serve:
Serve warm with sour cream, ranch dressing, or spicy mayo on the side.

Tips

  • You can use leftover mashed potatoes — just ensure they’re firm, not too creamy.

  • Add chopped green onions, jalapeños, or bacon bits to the filling for extra flavor.

  • To make it healthier, you can air fry at 375°F for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway.
