🥘 Cheesy Minced Meat & Mashed Potato Casserole
Ingredients
Meat Layer

500 g (1 lb) ground beef (or lamb)

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp oil or butter

2 tbsp tomato paste

½ cup tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes

½ tsp paprika

½ tsp black pepper

Salt to taste

Optional: ½ tsp dried thyme or oregano

Mashed Potato Layer

1 kg (2 lb) potatoes, peeled and cubed

3 tbsp butter

½ cup warm milk or cream

Salt to taste

Topping

1–1½ cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese

Optional: a little butter for the top

Instructions

Prepare the mashed potatoes

Boil potatoes in salted water until very soft.

Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, and salt.

Mash until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

Cook the meat

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

Sauté onion until soft.

Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.

Add ground meat and cook until browned.

Stir in tomato paste, tomato sauce, spices, salt, and pepper.

Simmer 5–10 minutes until thick.

Assemble

Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F.

Grease a baking dish.

Spread half the mashed potatoes on the bottom.

Add all the meat mixture.

Spread remaining mashed potatoes on top.

Sprinkle generously with cheese.

Bake

Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until golden and bubbling.

Optional: Broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning.

Rest & serve

Let rest 10 minutes before slicing.
